Farewell to @the.ou.telier as I’m heading home tod

Farewell to @the.ou.telier as I’m heading home today. Some pics with labels, while others are scenes from around the residency that I will miss.

I will miss these generous spaces for working, creativity and restorative rest. I’m heading home with plenty of fodder for the next phase of my big installation project!

I loved being alongside the creek, hearing how the sound of it changed with the weather over the month, watching the wildlife with my daily yoga and regular walks of the trail.

I have so much gratitude that I was able to do this, that I was privileged enough with the gift of time, and resources to be able to take such a retreat for my art-work. What a gift.

Watercolor has been the side quest of my residency

Watercolor has been the side quest of my residency @the.ou.telier -
Earlier this week Kimberly & I returned to beautiful Cowichan Bay for some en plein air time. We treated ourselves to lunch and warm beverages and enjoyed a picnic shelter out of the drizzle where we commenced to paint the moody afternoon light.

At one point a guy showed up to polar plunge - he walked down to the dock, noticeably in swim trunks and not much else. After his brief swim he stopped to chat, standing in wet trunks with bright red skin, curious what we were up to, where we were from etc. He comes to the spot every day to swim. He then proceeded to gossip about a “that crazy guy’s” boat that had finally sank this week. We were all bundled up and shivering with fingers that could barely feel our paintbrushes while this guy seemed comfortable as a summer day. Maybe there’s something to a regular polar plunge… Memorable, to say the least.

Studio views and sketches for my residency project

Studio views and sketches for my residency project at @the.ou.telier

1. Generous layout of space for the month. I’ve made thorough use of having the corner, by the door for a multitude of in & out for printing!

2. My gallery mockup sketch of the glacier installation I made for my application to @methodgallery has sat on the windowsill front and center to my work table. Beyond the house is the creek which I’ve enjoyed gazing out to while working. The flora from @laura_marie_clark has been a lovely addition to the scene 💖

3. All my various tone and exposure tests from pre residency and the first week, to map the gradient of tones I was aiming for.

4. My sketch mapping how many strips (15x54” approximately) I’d need of each tone. (Spoiler: a lot)

5. The soft glow of wintery light on the nearby trail.

How did one month go so quickly? So much gratitude to be here, to be able to do this work.

The last week of my four week artist residency at @the..telier and cyanotype prints aplenty. (Swipe!)

I’ve gotten a pretty good rhythm and process, but still been working through how to get the variety of results I need for what I’m building.

November in the Cowichan Valley ended up being more sunny and less rainy which is lovely, unless one was hoping to do a bunch of rain prints… 🤣I’ve played with making my own rain (thank you squirt bottle and arm muscles!) to some interesting results.

So many blues. So much rinsing. Nearly a month of work and still much more to do. Good thing there’s a year to go for this installation @methodgallery !

While working on the big cyanotype print project @the.ou.telier I’ve been also quietly filling my #sketchbook with watercolors from local adventures around the area. What a stunningly beautiful time it has been to be here with all the fall color!

Gratitude and appreciation post - this project of making #cyanotype rain prints all month would look very different if it weren’t for @thirdandwall - the paper I’m using wasn’t right for their needs and they offered it up to artists who could use it.

Epson poster printing paper takes to cyanotype beautifully btw! Big thank you Third and Wall for supporting artists in so many ways.

Wrapping up the first week at @the.ou.telier and a

Wrapping up the first week at @the.ou.telier and am so happy I started singing in the shower again. It’s incredibly satisfying to have dedicated time and space to sink into a big creative project. I can’t imagine a more beautiful and accommodating space. Our work areas in the shared studio are very generous and the living quarters are comfortable and well thought out for four working artists. This place is a gem and being here in autumn with the turning of the leaves over the creek outside is all the more special.

I’ve figured out my project map and practical set up of the “how” and now am heartily into production to build up the icy, glacial tones for my future installation at @methodgallery. A big project takes time and I’m so thankful I have it here, with space to truly dig in. I’ll be continuing to kill these blues for the next few weeks!

In only a few short days there have already been wonderful conversations with my cohort of artists, good walks and a couple of good sleeps lulled by the sounds of of the creek outside. What a gift to be here!

Got the new space with @kayleighchristine.art all set up and ready to roll. So much space and possibility and room for all our percolating projects! Very thankful we jumped on the opportunity together and excited to see where it leads us!

The rains have heartily returned to the Pacific No

The rains have heartily returned to the Pacific Northwest. Throwback to those liminal days of perfect autumn sunshine. Of sketching and contemplating along the glittering waterfront. Of the whole month free and full of promise.
Where the heck did the month go?

Answer: to a whole bunch of necessary but non-art things. To anxiety about the future stealing the present. To catching up on home things after near burnout. To lovely time spent with friends. To arranging and rearranging after a studio move. To allowing myself to rest and take in instead of output. To getting my hopes up about something big that didn’t pan out.

Long story short, it’s been a full few weeks.

It’s soooo nice to be getting back into my sketchbook. It’s a practice I’ve never been consistent with… but I sure do enjoy it when I give myself the moment.

I’ll never tire of sketching these scraggly coasta

I’ll never tire of sketching these scraggly coastal trees. I’m freshly returned from the Oregon coast. It was a poignant moment of pause as I’ve got a whole lot of changes ahead. So, felt like it was time for to make a new watercolor sketchbook. I spent a bit of every day of vacation working on filling up some pages.
